Edited by James Shirley Hibberd (1825–1890), one of the most successful Victorian gardening writers, founder of the Amateur Gardener and editor of the Gardener’s Magazine, the Vegetarian Advocate, and the Floral World and Garden Guide.

The Year Book features a monthly calendar followed by lists of horticultural exhibitions, newly discovered fruits, vegetables, and plants, new inventions, planters’ tables, and ‘Potatoes for Exhibition and General Culture’ (Shirley Hibberd had developed a keen interest in developing hardy potato varieties in the aftermath of the Irish potato famine). The various advertisements include flower and vegetable seeds for 1882, stoves, anti-disease manure, glass for greenhouses, ‘invincible’ lawnmowers, and garden tools, inter alia.

First American edition (includes the Erratum printed on p. 403) of Keynes’ path-breaking work, perhaps the most pervasively influential twentieth-century contribution to the social sciences, responsible for instilling the notion that ‘national budgets are major instruments in a planned economy, that financial booms and slumps are controllable by governments’ (PMM 609). The General Theory caused shock waves at the time. Its revolutionary impact was due in part to the economic circumstances in the 1930s when it was published, specifically the impact of widespread unemployment on public confidence in democratic institutions. Keynes’ work both provided an explanation for the crisis and proposed a solution that made use of existing systems of government, thus constituting a viable alternative to the rise of totalitarian strongmen that contemporaries witnessed in continental Europe.

Cicero in Bohemia CICERO, Marcus Tullius.

De philosophia tomus primus.

A small format Lyon edition of Cicero, in a contemporary calf gilt binding made in Lyon (or Paris), with later Bohemian ownership. This is one of numerous editions of classical texts printed by the prolific Sébastien Gryphe of Lyon, which were to be found in libraries across Europe, including some of the most renowned collections of the time. Gryphe printed eight volumes of Cicero’s works in this small format in 1546 (von Gültlingen V: 919–926).
