An unsophisticated copy of Passi and Ruscelli’s elaborations and explanations of Paolo Giovio’s history of his own time, bound in contemporary limp vellum reusing manuscript waste.
Paolo Giovio’s history was first printed in Florence in 1550, in Latin, and the Italian translation by Lodovico Domenichi quickly followed in 1551. Carlo Passi’s commentary La selva (The forest), in which he took a short passage from Giovio and greatly expanded and explained it, first appeared in the late 1550s and was occasionally attributed to his pseudonym Infortunio. The third work in this volume, the Sopplimento, is a page-for-page reprint of the 1560 Bonelli edition, though Bonelli’s preface to the index has been rewritten and the errata at the very end omitted, as the errors should have now been corrected.
The manuscript fragments used to line the spine come from a Breviary of the first half of the thirteenth century, written in two sizes of an Italian gothic bookhand. The text includes prayers and readings for the dedication of a church.
