First edition. This volume apparently contains Max Weber’s first appearance in English, entitled “The Relations of the rural community to other branches of social science”. The paper was delivered by Weber at the St. Louis World’s Fair and was first published in this translation. It never appeared in German, Weber’s original manuscript having been lost. Weber travelled to America for the Congress with a small German contingent and his wife Marianne; he was also visiting the Exposition, known variously as the World’s Fair and the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, in the hope of finding useful case studies for his studies of capitalism. The American trip of some three or four months also took in Protestantism and race relations, and a manic visit to New York.
